On many nights, new CAP users begin their night with a good effort using their CAP. Sometimes, however, compliance does not continue overnight. The inability to use CAP for the entire night is a great disservice to your health. The largest part of REM sleep, the most comfortable part of sleep, occurs between 4 and 6 am. REM sleep is often referred to as “dream sleep” and is necessary to get a restful night’s sleep.

The 5 stages of sleep begin with 1 and end with 5 stages. Stage 1 lasts approximately 1–7 minutes at the onset of sleep. It is a transitional state between waking and sleeping. Stage 2 takes the largest part of your gold. While it is slightly darker than stage 1, it is still considered a shallow state of gold. During this state, the muscles become completely relaxed and sluggish. The most important obstructive sleep apnea events are due to lack of muscle on your back and in the mother’s sleep. While muscle tone is still present in stages 1–4, it has disappeared during stage 5 and therefore it no longer helps to keep the airways open.

The first REM appears approximately 90 minutes after bedtime. As the night progresses, the cycle returns to stage 2. Steps 3 and 4 become shorter and your REM becomes longer. At 5 am your REM stays at its peak for 1 hour. By this time of night, your stages 3 and 4 are almost non-existent. A typical sleep pattern consists of 4 and 5 REM cycles.

The night sleep cycle often lasts from 1-2 to 4 – rem then stage 2-3-4. Repeat 2 to 4 to 5 times. Any phase with the previous one is very short. The time of 3 and 4 and REM is getting longer and longer while Deep Sleep Stage 3 and 4 becomes shorter. What sleep apnea does is disrupt the natural sleep cycle. The deeper the sleep cycle, the more OSA you have.

When you need a barrier and wind, you have to come out of those deep stages. After 1 to 2 steps you can now take a breath. This does not allow your deep sleep and REM to be any of your deep sleep or very little real restful sleep and you will never feel refreshed. An OSA person will get a lot of stage 2 light sleep and very little deep (slow-wave) or REM sleep. So even though you say “how can I not sleep, I sleep 9-10 hours a night and nap during the day!”.

If you are closing your CPAP at 2 or 3 am, you are volunteering before making sure that you need it the most. Your apnea will be in its worst state and you will not be able to sleep.
